MY CULTURAL
HERITAGE
In our family, what we
culturally practice is based from the beliefs and practices of our older
generations. We used to follow their cultural beliefs and traditions from generations to generations. Our family
believes in traditions such as “pahimag-o”, a simple celebration of thanks to
our ancestors and to God for the abundance we have received every cropping
season. Also, as a family who lives in the urban community, we still believe in
“pahilot” wherein if an individual or a family member got injured, he/she may see
someone who knows to “hilot”or have it “massaged.” We do believe in this healing
because my lola (mama’s mother) was a known “manog hilot” during her time. For
me, the most important thing that our older generations had passed on to us is
our faith and strong belief in God the Almighty and to always offer mass
intentions to our dear departed loved ones.
Today, our family still and will continue
to practice this culture even if the society nowadays tend to bury old
traditions and customs because of bandwagon or updated technology. My mom would
always tell me that no matter how advanced the world may be, always look back
to where you came from. Because values, beliefs, your moral and character as a
person will not fade along the way, but material things and luxuries will fade
by and by.
